So today it has hit me when I looked at the calendar and realized that I graduating in 2 months.... 2 months can I say that again lol...All I been thinking about is that there is no more fun college its now time for the real world and getting a JOB. When I googled JOB as an abbreviation I got a lot of different answers but I thought that Just Obey Boss was the best one. I mean it makes sense that it would stand for that. But what I am getting at is that the fact that I have to start looking for a JOB. But there is one thing that I learned when I went to my internship the other day. I was helping another music label out putting press kits together and just started a conversation with an employee there asking how she got her JOB. And honestly she said that it’s all about being at the right place at the right time and knowing the right people. And after hearing that it made so much sense. And then she got her JOB and she now Just Obeys her Boss and does what she loves at the same time. My question to you is...What is your definition of a JOB? And do you agree with the PR employee that I talked to about how she got her JOB?
I don't think that the employee you spoke with is wrong, a lot of the time it is very much being in the right place at the right time, but I don't think it is just that. After talking with a couple of the employees I work for, if you aren't going to find a job through a current internship you really have to search. I think she was onto something by saying, it's about who you know because the more people you know the better.
ReplyDeleteA lot like Professor Morosoff has said, you could wind up getting a job through the most unexpected people. As for what JOB means to me, haha well... Just Obey Boss is definitely part of that definition. All the more reason to make sure you like where you work.
Networking is definitely the best way to get a job or into a company. Once you have someone to vouch for you it becomes that much easier. So in that respect the employee was correct.
ReplyDeleteI think some things can go wrong with the Just Obey Boss idea. I think we'll go farther in our careers if we call out the things that aren't working and try to fix them, as long as it's done in a professional manner. Nobody likes someone who only agrees with them.
Often times getting jobs or internships does come down to just plain luck. I remember how I got my first internship it was Intouch Magazine. The deputy photo editor of Intouch was my stepmom's college roommate - LUCK! My second internship came out of a story I was covering for the We Are Comm Newsletter. I was at a panel and struck up a conversation with one of the panelists who needed a spring intern - LUCK! And the list goes on. Luck definitely plays a factor but all it does is get you in the door. If you dont have the experience or come across well in an interview...well thats where luck ends.
ReplyDeleteAs for Just Obey Boss - cute but it can only last so long. When your so focused on pleasing others you lose sight on pleasing yourself. In order for there to be a healthy work environment you must feel challenged and have the opportunity to grow. If your only obeying your boss you will eventually become stuck in a rut. Pleasing your boss is important (you need to stay employed after all) just maintain a healthy balance of pleasing the boss and yourself!
